About Laguna Chasicó Natural Reserve

Laguna Chasicó Natural Reserve is located in the south-central region of the Buenos Aires province in Argentina. It protects one of the last remnants of a large freshwater lagoon ecosystem in the Pampas, a region predominantly characterized by extensive grasslands and agriculture. Established in 1977, the reserve encompasses a mix of lagoon, marshes, and surrounding wetlands that provide a critical habitat for many bird species, including migratory and resident waterfowl. Notable species include the Coscoroba Swan, Black-necked Swan, and various ducks and herons, making it a premier birdwatching destination. The reserve’s flat terrain and abundance of water create a serene setting, ideal for wildlife viewing, photography, and contemplative walks. Laguna Chasicó is also significant from an ecological standpoint, supporting amphibians, fish, and mammals adapted to wetland environments. Historically, the region has been essential for local indigenous groups and later for agricultural communities, with the reserve now playing an important role in conserving the delicate balance of water resources. Visitors can enjoy gentle trails around the lagoon, observation points, and guided tours to learn about the complex ecosystems and conservation efforts underway. While infrastructure is minimal to preserve natural conditions, the reserve offers a peaceful contrast to surrounding farmlands, attracting naturalists, birders, and researchers. Its calm waters and wetland vegetation provide important breeding grounds and a crucial refuge for wetland fauna amidst a largely modified landscape.
